To catch a dragon in Catch Dragons To Defend, unlock or obtain a Capture Ball, approach a target, select a suitable ball, use the catch interaction shown by the current client, and wait for the success or break-free result. After a success, open the pen or collection and verify that the exact dragon was added. The official page confirms dragon catching; the detailed controls and menu names below are community corroborated and can change.
Unlock and stock Capture Balls
Current walkthroughs show a Basic Capture Ball unlock in the early upgrade flow. Complete the highlighted tutorial requirement before trying to catch. Then open the inventory or Backpack and note every available ball tier and count. If a code supplied items, confirm that they are stored rather than automatically equipped.
Do not carry only one valuable ball into a planned hunt. Ordinary early targets can establish the pen with cheaper stock. Save Advanced, Elite, or higher community-reported tiers for targets where the live chance or difficulty justifies them. See Capture Balls for the current cautious tier index.
Choose a target and leave room
Before throwing, check active pen capacity and storage. If both appear full, solve that first. The current build may send a successful catch to storage, refuse it, or use another overflow rule; do not risk a rare target until the interface makes the destination clear.
Read the target’s complete label. Note family name, age or form, rarity, and any chance or countdown. A family name does not determine rarity by itself. Current community examples show the same reported family with different form-and-rarity combinations.
Make the first throw
Move close enough for the catch prompt or aiming state to appear. On desktop, use the key or click shown in the live interface; on mobile, use the visible touch control. The exact input is not fixed here because Roblox control prompts can vary by device and the experience may update them.
Select the ball, center the target, and make one deliberate throw. Wait for the complete animation or result message. If the dragon breaks free, inspect the remaining timer, selected tier, displayed chance, and inventory count before trying again. Rapid input can hide the information you need.
Choose the right ball tier
When the interaction shows a chance, compare tiers before throwing repeatedly. A cheaper tier is efficient when its chance is already acceptable and the target is ordinary. A stronger tier becomes sensible when a valuable target repeatedly breaks free or the displayed improvement is large enough to protect time and total stock.
Current guides report Basic, Advanced, Elite, Supreme, Apex, and Master Capture Balls. This page does not assign exact bonuses or prices because no official UPD3 table is public and third-party values can drift. Read the current Shop or ball description.
Handle a break-free result
A failure is information. Confirm whether the ball was consumed, whether the dragon remains interactable, and whether a timer continues. If the selected tier has a poor displayed chance, do not repeat automatically. Move up when the target is worth the stock; stop when the remaining inventory cannot support a complete attempt.
If the target moves out of view, reposition without closing the catch UI unless necessary. If the input stops responding, avoid tapping multiple controls at once. Let the result finish, reopen the interaction, and confirm that the ball count matches what happened.
Confirm a successful catch
Open the collection, pen, roster, or storage interface and locate the exact name. Record age or form, rarity, stats, and the zone where it was caught. If the dragon is not active, determine whether it entered storage. Do not assume the catch failed merely because it did not appear visibly in the pen.
Before selecting Equip Best, note the current active team. After equipping the catch, observe the same enemy cycle and compare. A new dragon can be valuable for the Dex without improving the current combat roster.
Mobile catching tips
Keep the right side of the screen clear so the catch control and camera do not overlap your thumb. Close the chat and large panels before a timed attempt. Rotate the camera slowly enough to keep the target label visible. If the device drops frames, reduce visual settings before using scarce stock; a stable prompt matters more than decorative effects.
On a small screen, verify the selected ball icon after every failure. A scrollable inventory or small tap target can switch tiers unexpectedly. Pause after each throw and read the new count.
Catching in a public server
Another player’s effects can cover the target or result. Move to a clear angle and confirm whether the dragon interaction is personal or shared. Server age also matters after an update; if the current experience description mentions UPD3 but your server looks older, leave and join a fresh instance before testing a new dragon or code.
Avoid arguing from another player’s chance value. Capture-related upgrades, ball selection, target form, and server version can differ. Compare the labels shown on your own screen.
Why catching fails
Ball tier is too weak
The live chance remains poor or the target repeatedly breaks free. Compare the next tier before spending the rest of the same stock.
No usable pen space
The dragon may go to storage or the catch may not complete as expected. Learn the current overflow rule before hunting.
Prompt or aim is lost
Move closer, clear the camera, and use the displayed device-specific control instead of guessing a key.
Timer expires
Stop browsing menus during the attempt and prepare stock before interaction. Do not claim a universal timer from one sighting.
Server is stale
Join a fresh server after a visible update if new content or UI does not match the current official description.
Success is stored
Check the collection and storage before repeating a catch you may already own.
Catching FAQ
Do failed throws consume Capture Balls?
Watch the inventory count in the current client. Community guides describe repeated attempts but the exact consumption rule should be confirmed per build.
Is there a guaranteed catch ball?
No guaranteed tier is established by the official public description. Higher tiers are community reported, but use the displayed chance and current item text.
Can I catch a dragon with a full pen?
The overflow behavior needs live confirmation. Check storage and leave a known usable slot before risking a rare attempt.
What should I catch first?
Catch dependable early targets that can fill active slots and establish income. Move to rare hunts after the pen, stock, and upgrade loop works.
